Lubricants

Within the lubricants industry the pressures of a changing marketplace, volatile margins and the impact of global supply and demand balance have created a renewed focus on the need for a cost effective, efficient and sustainable supply chain.

High service quality, health and safety standards, margin control and operational excellence is regarded as a given. Companies are now looking for the supply chain to amend their service effectively around changing costs and working pressures.

Some of the challenges and supply chain demands that our customers are asking us to meet include;

  • Supporting major strategic changes, such as closure of UK blending plants;

    Our response ranges from the provision of import/export services using Wincanton international transport solutions, to a whole UK distribution platform including order management, bulk storage facilities, packed warehousing and transport services.
  • Agility in responding to changes in supply & demand and volatile margins;

    Providing distribution services on a 'pay as you occupy/use' basis rather than dedicated facilities or combination of the two.
  • SKU and customer demand changes, for example movement towards more added value products, smaller drop sizes over a wider range of grades, increased frequency/JIT deliveries;

    Wincanton has combined innovative vehicle design increasing the number of grades that can be carried on one vehicle with effective routing & scheduling practices and systems
  • Management of market forces such as rising costs of production, demand decreases due to the current economic climate, and its effect on industrial customers especially in the automotive and manufacturing sector;

    Our approach is to look at the total supply chain, identifying and controlling all cost drivers with flexible solutions such as shared user warehousing, innovations in vehicle design and technology, and efficiency/productivity gains, for example increased fleet utilisation.
  • Environmental pressures and considerations;

    We have been able to offer intermodal solutions, reduced transport impacts through vehicle design and transport optimisation, and improved mpg through driver management and training.
  • Increased demand for higher levels of customer service and improved information flows;

    Management of the customer services function; order management, in-cab technology and tracking services are a number of the services Wincanton provides in this area.
